The six patterns

The six shadow archetypes

A shadow archetype is the shape your self-protection took. Six of them cover most of what people arrive with: the Performer, the Carrier, the Exile, the Guardian, the Ghost and the Architect. Each one is a strategy that worked at the time, kept running long after the situation that required it ended.

They are not personality types and they are not diagnoses. A personality is something you are; a pattern is something you learned, which means it can be interrupted. That distinction is the whole reason this is worth reading.

The six

The Performer

Self-erasure

You learned to disappear yourself to belong. The version of you the world sees was carefully constructed to keep the peace.

I disappear to belong.

The Carrier

Inherited weight

You have been carrying weight that was placed on you before you could consent. Other people's pain became your responsibility.

I carry what was never mine.

The Exile

Self-abandonment

You left yourself to keep relationships intact. Your needs became negotiable. Your presence became conditional.

I left myself to keep the peace.

The Guardian

Emotional fortress

You protect everyone except yourself. Your strength became a cage. Vulnerability feels like a threat you cannot afford.

I protect everyone except myself.

The Ghost

The unlived life

You mourn a version of yourself that never got to exist. The life you are living is impressive from the outside and hollow from the inside.

I mourn a version of me that never got to exist.

The Architect

Premature rebuilding

You sense the new self forming but keep reaching for the old blueprints. The hardest part is trusting what has not yet taken shape.

I am rebuilding from honest materials.

Questions people ask

Can I be more than one?

Almost everyone is. The patterns overlap by design, because they are responses to overlapping situations: a Carrier who performs, a Guardian who is also grieving an unlived life. What the quiz gives you is the one that is loudest right now, which is usually the one worth working with first.

Is this based on Jung?

The idea of the shadow is Jung's: the parts of a person that the conscious self refuses to recognise as its own. These six archetypes are not his. They are a working vocabulary for the shapes that material tends to take, written for people doing the work on their own at night, not for clinicians. The longer explanation is here.

How is this different from a personality test?

A personality test tells you what you are and expects the answer to hold for life. This names what you have been doing to stay safe, and expects it to change. If a result here ever reads as a fixed identity rather than a description of a pattern, treat that as a flaw in the writing rather than a fact about you.

Which one are you working from?

Twelve questions, about three minutes, no account. You get the shadow archetype you are working from and the one line underneath it.
